Created 20 years ago to train physicians worldwide about the latest scientific and medical advances in neuromuscular diseases, the 20th edition of the Summer School of Myology has just terminated.
In 1998, the Institute of Myology was inspired by the concept of summer schools, very popular in the Anglo-Saxon academic world, and founded the Summer School of Myology. Coordinated by Professor Michel Fardeau and Dr. JA Urtizberea, two internationally recognised French experts in neuromuscular pathology, the Summer School of Myology aims to train doctors throughout the world about the latest scientific and medical advances in neuromuscular diseases, thereby contributing to the improvement of patient care in each country and to the international emergence of a true medical and scientific discipline, myology.
In 20 years, the Summer School of Myology has trained more than 850 physicians from 5 continents. Physicians and researchers from Argentina, Brazil, Nepal, Peru, Latvia, Lebanon, the Ivory Coast, Benin, Iran, India, Italy, Spain, England…form today an international network of myology experts. Taught in English by nearly 40 physicians and scientists specialists in their field, and often world-renowned, this ten-day training course allows students to follow a condensed and accelerated Myology program, equivalent to that proposed by the Inter-University Diploma of Myology, organised by the universities Paris-6 and Aix-Marseille and which lasts one year.
Building on its success, the Summer School of Myology has now extended to Latin America, Russia and soon to the Middle East. The American School of Myology was largely inspired by the Summer School of Myology.
This 2017 edition, which was held from 15 to 23 June, focused on therapeutic aspects, presenting current clinical trials and the first medicinal products for neuromuscular diseases on the path to marketing authorisation.
